Lyric Timings
In these images below you will be able to see that I have written down the timings for each line of lyrics in the song and this will help me during my filming process as it will allow me to figure out what I would like the happen at a certain time in the music video and also it will help me when it comes to editing as I will know what parts being lip synced will need to be edited in. Here are my lyric timings for 'Not Enough' by Avril Lavigne:

My Audience Profile
I have produced a mood board to present what the Pop Punk genre is like and what people in this genre tend to be passionate about. This mood board presents a range of things including how people tend to dress in this genre and what type of things they like and enjoy to do. A lot of people will stereotypically recognize this genre for its dark yet crazy features that people do not often conform to, but for the people that like this genre, they enjoy all this kind of stuff which is why I think my mood board is a great way of representing the Pop Punk genre.
Here is my Pop Punk mood board:
I have come to a conclusion about my target audience and have decided to aim my music video, digipack and promotional poster at teenagers and young adults. I have chosen this age range as my target audience because the majority of people that listen to this genre of music or either a teenager or young adult and seem to know a lot about it. Although there are some older people that like this genre as well, I will be aiming my work at the larger age range that I know will listen and watch music videos for this genre of music. Due to this, when it comes to pricing of my digipack I will need to ensure that teenagers and young adults would be able to afford it because a lot of teenagers will be at school or college, so may not have a job and young adults would just have started to begin full time work or may not even have a job yet, so would not have the money to be buying albums, so I will make the price reasonable enough as I would need to ensure that my artist will earn money as well as the audience being happy with the price they pay.
I can't decide which social class I will aim my products at because although some families may be wealthier than others, the teenagers are still the ones that will be buying the products themselves and they don't earn the money themselves, so will have to use money they have saved to buy my products. If I had to choose which class to aim my products at then I would say I am aiming this at people in both the lower middle class (C1) and skilled middle class (C2). I have said this because I would like the audience to be happy with the amount of money they will have to pay, but I would also want my artist to earn money from their work and if I aimed my products at the lower classes, then my artist would not gain much money because the pricing will be relatively cheap. In relation to the psychographic table, I feel as if I will be targeting my work towards the explorers and reformers - I chose these two because they represent people that want to do and find new things, which is what I think they will be able to do with this type of music, but also they want freedom which is what this music can do as it presents to the audience that they can do what they want without caring what others think and this can often be witnessed in the lyrics of their songs.

Poll Research
To help me gain a greater understanding of my intended target audience I decided to create a poll on my blog where anyone that approaches my blog will be able to fill in the answer I have asked questions for. The questions I have put on my blog are based more around the genre of Pop Punk rather than just general question like I have previously done on the survey I have created; I have also included both demographic and psychographic related questions so I can find out more about Pop Punk fans which will help me in creating my music video because I will know what people who like this genre enjoy seeing. To show you how I have created this poll, I decided to record the screen while I was creating this poll to allow you to see how it was created. Here is the video I have constructed:
I have added seven different questions to my blog which you would have just witnessed in this video, but the questions I have put on my blog include: 'What is your gender?', 'How old are you?', 'How often do you listen to Pop Punk music?', 'Which of these bands/artists have you heard of /listened to?', 'Do you enjoy watching music videos?', 'Which of these five music videos is your favourite?' and 'What type of music video do you prefer to watch?'. By asking these questions I will hopefully be getting a lot of responses from Pop Punk fans which will help me when constructing my own music video. By asking some demographic questions, I am able to get a greater understanding of the age group and gender that are more likely to watch a Pop Punk music video, so I am able to appeal to a certain category more than another. By asking these some psychographic questions, I am able to find out more information about the the person themselves;what they like when it comes to Pop Punk music videos and if there is something that they really enjoy seeing, then I will more than likely try to add it to my music video to entice more people from this genre - however, in relation to Chris Anderson's Long Tail theory, I probably won't use something that one out of twenty people may say because it will only be appealing to that niche audience and I want to appeal to a mass audience. I feel that after putting these questions on my blog, more people will want to fill in the questions because the majority of my blog is about Pop Punk, so if people are regularly looking on my blog, then they will hopefully like to fill in the questions I have put on my blog. I have left the poll running until 1st January 2017, so I am able to create the first draft of my music video and if I find that there are more responses where people have said they like certain things that I have not included in my music video, then I will be able to add these features into my second draft - also, it gives people more time to complete the poll if they have not yet seen it.
In addition, I then wanted to promote this poll further like I have previously done with my survey, but I wanted to approach people that actually like this genre. So I have only posted about my poll on Twitter, where I have asked people to participate because I know that a range of people on Twitter have fan accounts for certain artists and a lot of these type of users follow me, who also like the genre Pop Punk, so by posting this on Twitter I will hopefully get more people to complete my poll which will again help me if I am wanting to make any changes in who I want my audience to be or what I would like to do in my music video. I decided not to post and promote this on my Facebook wall or to email other people like I did with my survey because I knew that the majority of the friends I have on Facebook do not like Pop Punk as much as people I know on Twitter do and emailing it would have meant that people would have replied stating that they do not like Pop Punk music and would not be able to fill in the poll because it would not be helpful towards my investigation.

Demographics/Psychographics
Demographics
Demographics are a statistical collection of data usually in relation to population which also includes features like; age, income, education, gender, race and more. Demographics can be used by Governments, Corporations and Non-Government organizations to allow them to acquire more information about the populations characteristics for a range of different purposes, which include, policy development and economic market research. These are very important and also link into the sales of media products as the success of the majority of businesses generally depends on the understanding of the demographics for the target audience a certain product is going to be sold to. A demographic table has been created to present that demographics are broken into different bands depending on peoples social class because a product may be produced, but it may only be targeted at people who are of a higher status - meaning the pricing of the product will doubtless be higher and of better quality than something targeted at the lower classes.
Once deciding which social class the product is going to mainly be aimed at, the marketers will then have to think about pricing, packaging, promotion and the area the product will be sold in. Again, this is because if a lower class based product had been produced then you wouldn't want to see it being sold in a upper class area because no one there would buy it, but also you will have to ensure that the price is suitable because the marketers won't want to make something really expensive if it is going to be aimed at the lower class who won't be able to afford it. The first thing that marketers have to understand to be able to create the correct product for the intended audience is that that they will need to know who the customers are with factual information about them. Such information like age, gender and education tells the marketer how likely a person is to purchase their item because of the way they live their lives. Demographics is essential because the majority of the time a large mass of things are very expensive - meaning companies won't want to be wasting money on promoting products toward people who won't buy them, so by collecting these demographics, the seller will be able to sell their products to the right target audience and this will also be more cost effective for the companies. As I have previously mentioned, there is a table available that allows companies to know what type of social class they should be aiming their products at.
Here is the demographic table:
The lower classes are commonly known as group E and the upper classes are generally known as group A; then the middle classes are in between. As previously stated, when selling products to a certain target audience you will want to ensure that you are making the product accessible for the audience because you won't want someone not being able purchase something because it is too expensive when it has been aimed at their social class. An example of when this table could be used incorrectly, or when it may not even be used at all and ruins a products sales is when a product may be constructed for a builder (for example) meaning they are probably in the middle class or something similar. Nonetheless - if this product is being sold in areas where a lot of business men/women work which puts them somewhere in the upper class or close to it, then the product won't be purchased by anyone because it is being advertised and promoted in the wrong area and this is why this demographic table is very important when it comes to selling certain products to certain audiences.
Psychographics
Psychographics is different to demographics in the way that this is more about the study of personality, values, opinions and interests more than the actual facts about the certain person - this is more about how the person acts and physically does things rather than factual things about the person - for example, where they live and how old they are. This sort of information is necessary for marketing purposes because it allows the marketer to know what the target audience likes and what interests them, which will help the marketers in creating products that will entice their target audience and make them want to buy the products when they are being sold. These statistics are very useful because they allow the creators of products to ensure that what they create will be appealing towards its intended target audience. For example, if there was a person who enjoyed reading and they were in the middle class (demographics), then the creator of the product would make sure their Media text has more writing in - this generally depends on the quantity of audience that want this though. This fits in with the Long Tail Theory by Chris Anderson as the producers of products won't create something that is only going to appeal to one person, they are going to create something that will appeal to a large range of people, this is why niche audiences rarely see the things that they find interesting. Similarly to demographics, there is also a table for psychographics which allows marketers to identify all the different types of personalities that they can appeal their products to.
Here is the psychographic table:
There are a wide range of personalities that people can possess, but these are the broad few that can be selected when deciding what category a certain product should fall into. The categories range from 'Mainstreamers' which is usually the largest group and includes people who generally do whatever normally occurs in life and will do what other people do rather than what they want to do for themselves. The other end of the table includes the 'Reformers' who are the complete opposite of 'Mainstreamers' and would rather do things for themselves than doing the usual and expected that everyone else does. There are a range of other categories between these two and they are all different in their own way. This table is very important for marketers because if they were selling a product for people who are adventurous, outgoing and willing to do things on their own, than they wouldn't want to appeal to people in the 'Mainstreamers' or 'Strugglers' category and would rather want to appeal to people in the 'Explorers' and 'Reformers' categories as they are a lot more adventurous and free flowing.
Audience Research
After researching demographics and psychographics I decided to create a survey with questions which relate to demographics and psychographics so I can get to know more about people and how they feel and understand music videos, which will help me when I am creating my own music video. I have created this Survey on a website called 'Survey Monkey' where I was able to create ten questions which all relate to the demographics and psychographics of Media texts. I have also generated a video which presents how I have created this survey - the video I have constructed is just over six minutes long - however, this is shorter than the original as it used to be twelve minutes long, but I have sped the video up because I know it would be tedious to sit and watch me create a survey for twelve minutes - plus, I have added some music to keep you engaged.
Here is the video that presents how I created my survey:
After creating my survey, I knew that I was going to have to promote it to ensure that people actually completed my survey and I actually got valid answers so this investigation would be successful. I decided to promote my survey in a range of different ways and this has been made easy nowadays because of the concept of digitalisation which allows me to promote my own work on a range of different social media's through the use of web 2.0. Firstly, I advertised my survey on my Facebook wall - asking for people to fill in this survey as part of my Media course - this would appeal to a wide range of different people as I have over 500 Facebook friends from different parts of the world, so I would be able to get a range of peoples views on music videos from different countries and ethnic groups which gives me a broader range of peoples to analyse. The next social media website I decided to advertise my survey on was Twitter - personally this was the best place for me to post and advertise my survey because I again have an array of different friends from many countries that follow me as I have over 4500 followers. This means that my survey will gain quite a large mass audience especially because people are able to retweet my tweet, which allows other users that follow the person who retweeted to see my tweet and complete my survey. Lastly, someone that had completed my survey offered to find out if other people they knew would complete this survey as well. After everyone confirmed they would do it, I was then given their email address' and was able to send them a link to the survey and this again was beneficial because it meant that more people were willing to take part in my survey and wanted to help me in understanding what different people are like both demographically and psychographically. I could have also promoted this survey on other social media's like Instagram and Snapchat - however, I rarely use these applications and if I did promote my survey on these, then I wouldn't have received many answers. By promoting my survey on social media's I will hopefully get more of a response, especially from the younger generations (teenagers and young adults) who are more likely to use social media sites and who are also going to mainly be who my music video is aimed at.
After two days I had received 56 responses on my survey and was able to look at the feedback and see how different people approached my questions. I have created a presentation where I have explained each different question that I have asked in the survey and then I have examined and looked in detail at what people have said and how this feedback may help me when creating my own music video. Here is my presentation:
After doing some general research about music videos, I then wanted to concentrate more on the audience who enjoy the genre that I am doing for my music video, so I can understand what these fans like to see, which I am then able to input into my creation of a music video. Nonetheless, this general research will also be useful for me as I will be able to include things into my music video that people who like different genres enjoy seeing, so I can appeal to a larger target audience and entice them to watch my video and buy my products, but my main objective will be to target the people who already enjoy listening and watching music videos for this genre of music.
The first thing I did was collect all of the data from the survey where the users had said their preferred genre was Punk, as my chosen genre is Pop Punk. I then put all the answers together into a slideshow so I would be able to see the differences and similarities between each user, which will then allow me to see what fans of this genre like the most, which I am then able to include in my music video or during the process of constructing it.
Here is the slideshow of the responses I have received:
From this feedback, I can identify that the majority of the respondents where males as there was only one female out of the 7 responses. This informs me that I will have a larger male audience than female and should try to appeal to men more than women. However, I my chosen artist it female which may change these results a bit because all of the respondents stated that their favourite artist was male - I predict that I will have more female fans than male. Nonetheless, I will be appealing to both genders so I can reach a larger target audience. As I am on the topic of artists, I am able to see that the mass bulk of the respondents said that they liked these artists because they had a big impact on them and the lyrics in their songs were meaningful and memorable, which I think is very interesting because it means that the music video created will be made memorable because it will reinforce the lyrics and I will be able to do this so people will remember my music video and want to watch it again. On top of that, the a large amount of the respondents are either teenagers or young adults, which is who my music video is going to be aimed at, so this proves my theory that the younger generation will be more likely to listen to and watch music video for this genre of music. However, I can't ignore the fact that there were some people from the older generation, but I won't desperately try to engage the older generation because I know a lot of them don't like music videos and don't watch watch them or only occasionally watch them which highlights that if I did try to entice the older generation then they may not be that interested, so I am going to keep with the younger generation.
Furthermore, as previously identified, the majority of people watch music videos on YouTube due to the revolution of digitalisation which has made this possible - meaning I will easily be able to reach my target audience once posting my music video onto YouTube. When asking if the respondents enjoyed watching music videos I received a range of responses, most of the older generation said they no longer watch music videos and are not longer interested - however, my target audience is the younger generation and a lot of them said they enjoy watching music videos because they can see the artists interpretation of the song which allows the audience to understand the real meaning behind the lyrics. They also said they are entertaining to watch as you are able to see something visually as well as listening to the song. Lastly, 4 out the the 7 responses I received stated that they like to watch an abstract video rather than a narrative which I thought would be the response I would receive because the majority of existing music videos for this genre are mainly performance based rather than narrative based and in my music video I am planning on including a narrative and performance - however, it will mainly be based on the performance as this is what the majority of Pop Punk fans enjoy seeing.
I later decided to ask people who I personally knew liked this genre of music to fill out some questions about the genre I had written down on paper. I received four different responses as this is the amount of people I asked to fill out my form and have put them all together on a slideshow to present what all of the responses were.
Here is the slideshow with my responses on:
From this feedback you can see that all of the responses I received were from females - I did this purposely to present that there are females that do enjoy listening to this genre of music rather than just men which was highlighted in the previous survey that I had created. The majority of the people I asked to complete this form where all teenagers which again reinforces the idea that a lot of teenagers and young adults will listen to this genre of music. Even though I already knew the ages of all of the people completing this survey, I knew that there are more teenagers and young adults that like this genre of music than young children or people who are a lot older. On top of that, all of the people I asked to fill the survey out where from England, but again this was because I asked people who lived near me and who I know liked this genre of music to complete this form - however, this presents that there are quite a few people who live in England and around my area that like this genre of music, so when I try to promote my music video I will hopefully have a large range of people that will watch it. Also, most of the respondents stated that they have three bedrooms (except one) which highlights that I would be appealing towards people of the middle class as this is an average amount of bedrooms to have in a middle class house, but it also shows that there are presumably more people in the house, so the one person that is a fan of Pop Punk could be playing certain music in their room and then their siblings or parents may come in and say that they like the music being played and then more people in the family may listen to the music which would help in people watching my music video. Moreover, all of the people that completed this survey stated that they would expect to see an abandoned building and a dark/gloomy woods or forest and also dark clothing in a Pop Punk music video which highlights that people who watch music videos for this genre of music are more likely to see darker features than lighter features - demonstrating that the ideas I have had for my music videos will work and appeal toward the right target audience because I have chosen to use a woods as my location which will include dark lighting. Furthermore, the majority of the respondents said that their favourite artist was Fall Out Boy out of the list I had given them, but some others stated that they had other artists that they really liked as well, but next to their chosen selection they stated that they enjoy this style of music as it is different and unique from others and the lyrics of the song are entertaining which implies that this genre of music is unlike others, but people still like it and like to understand the lyrics even if they are about different subjects to stereotypical songs because it is what makes them unique.
The majority of the respondents said they preferred fast edits - however, one of the the respondents said that it depends on the style and theme of the song which I think means that if a slow song was being played, then you are more likely to see slow edits, but if a fast song was being played then you are more likely to see fast edits because it goes with the beat/song just like one of Andrew Goodwin's key features states. The song I have chosen is slow but could possibly include some fast edits which will engage the audience more and keep them interested. There was a mix between who liked to see a narrative music video and who liked to see an abstract video, but one of the respondents said that it will often depend and a narrative should be used if you want to make the music video emotional and have meaning to it, but if not, then an abstract video is better for just general things like a performance, but I believe that this is the same for any genre of music. Nonetheless, I will be including both a narrative and performance, but I will have a stronger performance than narrative - however, the narrative will still create meaning and emotion for the audience. The last question I asked was about what people liked the most about music videos and the majority of the answers I received where the same as most of the respondents stated that a music video will have a story behind it and uses imagery which allows the audience to understand what the artist is feeling and trying to say through the use of their lyrics. One of the respondents said they enjoy the performance that is given in a music video and also the emotional connection you can have with the music video which is what I would like the audience to have when they watch my music video to make them feel the emotion of the artist.
Synopsis
I decided to be more creative when constructing my synopsis and rather than writing it I have instead made it into a video to make it more interesting to watch and to also have some music in the background to help you get a feel for what the idea is like. My synopsis is 190 words long and demonstrates what my idea for my music video is. Ten extra words that I would like to add to my synopsis to make it 200 words is 'There will be a large amount of editing and performance'.
Here is my video:
Initial Ideas on Mise-en-scene / Cinematography
As I am slowly approaching the time to start producing my music video I need to think about mise-en-scene and cinematography and so far I do have a few ideas on what type of costumes, locations, props, camera angles and more that I would like to use in my music video. At this moment in time I do not have a final decision on everything I am going to do in my music video as I will have more of an idea once I have created my storyboard and finalised what my idea is, but for now I have just a few ideas as to what type of things I would like to use in my music video and what I would like to happen in it.
Mise-en-scene
I have a range of different ideas about what I would like to do in relation to mise-en-scene, including some location, costume and prop ideas that I have. Again, as I previously said, I do not have any finalised ideas, so I do not have any personal photos that I have taken myself as I am still unsure on what I would like specifically - however, I have included images of any general features I would like to include in my music video and once I have finalised my ideas I will then create a new post sating what they are with my own personal images. Below I have created a presentation which demonstrates some of the different ideas I have generated in relation to mise-en-scene.
Here is my presentation:
Cinematography
In relation to cinematography there are a range of different angles and camera movements which I could use and I do have a few in mind at the moment. However, I do not know all of the different types of camera angles I would like to use because I have not yet thought about my music video in that much detail, but while I am creating my storyboard I will mention what angles I want to use for each shot as this will help me when I come to actually creating my video. Here is a list of some of the shots that I am planning on using so far:
This is just a short list of the angles and camera movements that I would like to incorporate into my music video and as I previously said, when I am creating my storyboard I will think about all the angles and camera movements in more detail. Out of the angles I have already mentioned, I would like to use them for a range of different reasons. Firstly, I would like to use a pan because this will establish the location that my actor is in and will allow the audience to see where the actor is, which will also lead them onto thinking about why she is in that certain location and how it relates to the song and its lyrics. I decided that I would like to use close ups because for one, this is a stereotypical convention that is used in Pop Punk music videos, but also as this is a slow and emotional song I would like the audience to be able to see the emotion on the actors face which will help create emotion for the audience too and possibly sympathy. I would like to use both a high and low angle because at the beginning of the video I want to present to the audience how the actor is vulnerable and can't escape from the relationship which will be presented through high angles, but by the end of the video the actor will be free and can get away from the relationship which is where all of the low angles will be used to express her dominance.
Moreover, I would like to include a lot of depth of field shots because I want to present how everything is still a blur to the actor because she doesn't know whether she should leave the relationship or not. Depth of field can also ironically help create confusion for the audience as well as they will be unsure on whether the actor will get out of the woods (relationship) or not. Finally, since I decided to chose the idea where the actor will be running through the woods, I think that it would be good to have tracking shots and dolly's as they will follow the actor and allow the audience to see every move she is making, these shots also help express that the actor is trying to get away from something quickly because the camera (the audience) will be trying to keep up with the actor but she will just keep running which may also demonstrate that she doesn't want to be around other people and would rather be isolated, which is again another stereotypical feature that is often seen in Pop Punk music videos.
Influences
When thinking about different camera angles and movements I was influenced by a lot of music videos I have previously seen as I knew that it was going to be hard to think of what angles to use, but after watching a range of different music videos from my genre I know have a better idea on what type of camera angles I would like to use in my music video and when it comes to me creating my storyboard I will have a better idea on what type of camera angles and movements I would like to use. Here are two of the music videos I have previously watched which have influenced me as they have used camera angles I may possibly use in my music video:
New Found Glory - I Don't Wanna Know
Sum 41 - Pieces
Identity For My Artist
When it comes to musical artists, each one will want to present themselves in their own unique way so audiences can identify them for certain things. For example, the way Lady Gaga dresses and the way Amy Winehouse styles her hair - this can link in with Andrew Goodwin's theory as this is in relation to his 'Star Image' feature about how artists will have their own unique feature that everyone will know that artist by. It is said that image is now beginning to overtake music as this is what people like to see visually rather than actually concentrating on the song which is why it is important for me to create an identity for my artist. I will need to construct an identity for my artist so her fans will know how to identify her and can detect how she is different compared to other artists to present what makes her unique. Since I have not yet created my storyboard, I do not know exactly what I would like my artist to be wearing or what I would like her name or logo to be like, so instead I have created some mood boards to express what kind of things I could possibly use in my music video and how to present the artist as an individual towards the audience. However, these are just some ideas for now; after I have created some mood boards I will generate a finalised idea about all of these features as I will know more about how I have presented my artist and how I have made them appeal to people.
Some of the important features that help represent an artist as an individual include;
Genre/Sound
Costume (including hair and make up)
Visual aesthetic for logo/album art/poster etc.
Instruments Played
How the artist addresses the media/fans
Artists Background
Artists Management
These are the main important features that will help me in creating an identity for my artist. I am going to talk about the majority of these features in relation to my artist in more detail below - however, there are some I am not going to talk about like 'how the artist addresses the media/fans' because at this moment in time my artist does not have any fans and is not communicaing with the media, so I would not be able to talk about this in more detail. Nonetheless, the features I am not able to mention will not be important in relation to my music video and I need to concentrate more on features like clothes and font styles for the artists logo. Again, I will not be making any final decisions on what my artists identity will be until I have created my storyboard because after I have constructed this, I will then know what I would specifically like my artist to look like - nonetheless, I will establish a style for my artist, which will regularly be seen being worn by my artist.
Genre/Sound
The genre I have already chosen for my music video is Pop Punk, which is a sub genre of Punk, so I am planning on adhering to this genre of music for my artist throughout their career. However, the original artist of the song I have chosen to use (Avril Lavigne) can often be seen fitting into other genres as well, such as the sub genres Pop Rock, Punk Rock and occasionally just the main genre Rock. Due to this, I think I will have my artist merging with similar genres every so often, but she will mainly be associated with the sub genre Pop Punk or just Punk and this is what I would like people to categorize her as if they ever mention her name or someone asks what genre she plays. Underneath I have created a mood board to present what this type of genre looks like visually and how it will represent my artist.
Here is my mood board:
By looking at this mood board you can see that this genre of music represents dark features, which is why my artist will have to wear dark clothes in all of her products and should be in dark locations in the music video unless the point of the music video is to contradict the song and should be presented in a different way. However, if there was a Pop Punk song which was upbeat then brighter locations could be used, but the video could possibly just be darkened by effect to present that it is a Pop Punk music video and still has some darkness to it. After considering this mood board, I now know that my artist will need to be identified and put in the category that all of the things on my mood board are put into; I need to ensure that my artist could be placed onto this mood board and would look like part of it and the genre that is represents.
Costume
The clothes that a certain artists wears will always express who they are as a person because they are wearing the clothes they feel comfortable in the most, so if someone saw a person who was dressed in full black, they would probably suggest that person likes Rock or a genre similar and if someone saw someone wearing pink alongside other bright colours, then they would suggest that person likes Pop or Dance music - however, this is not always the case as people could wear dark clothes even if they like Pop music and vise versa, but most of the time peoples dress code will conform to the genre of music they like and this is the same when it comes to artists. It is said that image is now taking over the whole concept of music and fans look up to certain artists because of the way they dress and this is understandable because people like to see others who dress in an attractive way because it is different and unique, but also some artists often manage to get their fans to dress in the way they do which can often promote the artist more.
In relation to my artist, she will frequently have to be wearing darker clothes to represent this genre of music as this will entice the right audience and also present what genre of music she will fit into. If I wanted to, I could also make the clothes that my artist wears seem different to the usual as they could be the same colour, but could be strangely shaped which people will find interesting to look at and then will stay engaged when watching my artists music video as they will think what she is watching is so bizarre. On top of that, I do not know whether I would like my artist to have heavy make up on regularly or not because often it could seem quite distracting or unappealing which may not help when trying to gain a larger target audience, also I would like my artists to have a casual hairstyle to present that she is just an ordinary person and does what other people do too. Below I have created a mood board to express what type of clothes and styles I could possibly use for my artists, again this is just what my artist could wear in general and is not my final decision for what she will wear for the music video.
Here is my mood board:
In this mood board you can identify that there are a range of different styles of clothes, but they are all similar in a way as they all represent Pop Punk, or they all can if you style them in the correct way. When people think of Pop Punk they will often think of dark clothing, but you will often see certain artists wearing different colours as well like green and white which adds more colour the their style and can often make them stand out more. Again, at this moment in time, I am still considering what my artist will wear for the music video, but some of these clothing examples will help me in figuring it out. On top of that, I have also looked at an array of make up styles; I could either have my artist wear heavy make up or only a little, but this will depend on whether I will want the scene of each music video to seem casual or not, because for the performance I could have the artist wear a lot of make up and for the narrative I could only have them wearing a little as it is less likely the artist will be wearing heavy make up on a casual day. During the narrative scenes I would want it to look like it had not been planned, whereas with the performance, I will want it to look like it has been planned as the artist will be directly addressing the audience and showing their emotion because they know the camera is there, but in the narrative they will pretend that they don't know the camera is near them.
Furthermore, there are also a range of hair styles and jewelry that my artist could possibly include in her outfits, but again this will all depend on the situation and whether it is a casual scene or a planned scene. By dressing in this kind of style, the audience will know that my artist is part of the Pop Punk scene because these types of costume I have displayed would fit in perfectly with the previous mood board about the Pop Punk genre. Moreover, it is said that artists should try not to restrict their image to one genre and should try and mix it up a bit to express their personality - however, I do not think this applies to my genre because you would never see someone from the Pop Punk genre wearing all pink as it would completely go against the conventions of Pop Punk; also people wouldn't be able to tell that my artist is from the Pop Punk genre if I tried to change their unique style just to appeal to other genres and it would be better for me to appeal to the audience who I know like this genre and then anyone who may like my artists music or style from a different genre could become part of my artists audience/fan base and can like her music, but also music that they like from other genres.
Visual Aesthetic For Logo
A unique logo for a certain artist is essential because it expresses the personality of the artist because if someone had a sharp and rough looking logo, then it would represent that they are hardcore and don't really care what they do as they will do what they want, but if you have a soft, bubbly looking logo, then it would represent a pleasant and fun artist. The logo that has been created for a certain will often be seen on all of their products, including posters and albums which is why the logo that has been chosen will need to be right and will represent the artist. This could be hard for my artist because her genre is quite rough where you would often see sharp and bold logo's, but the lyrics for her songs are emotional and melancholy which may represent that she has a softer side, so I could try to create a logo that is both rough but soft at the same time. In addition, since I have not yet finalised my storyboard and costume ideas, I don't officially know what type of logo I would like to use, so I decided to go onto a website called 'Dafont.com' and looked at some font styles I could perhaps use for my artist. The fonts I have looked at are not my own creation, but when it comes to constructing my digipack and poster I will create the logo myself but may use some ideas from the fonts I have found from this website. Before looking at any fonts, I had to create a name for my artist and below I have created a quick presentation to allow you to see what names I have thought of, which I have chosen and why.
Here is my presentation:
Here is an image to present the fonts I found which I think could possibly be used for my artist:
When looking at possible fonts I could use I had to think about who my artist is as a person and how the logo will represent them. My artist is in the Pop Punk genre so will have to have a dark and sharp logo which reinforces the concept of this genre - however, the song my artist is singing presents that she can often be emotional, which presents her weaker side to the audience and may express that it would be better to not have such a sharp font and could perhaps use a softer one. By looking at these fonts you can see that there are a wide variety as some are quite bold and engaging whereas others connote more of an innocent tenor, but still present a darker side. Some of the softer fonts shown present more of a feminine side which I think would be beneficial because it would mean the look would appeal towards both the male and female audience, meaning my artist could potentially have a larger target audience because the audience could find the logo appealing and it also expresses that my artist is from the Pop Punk scene. I have not yet decided which font I would like to use as a template - however, when it gets closer to the time I will be creating my logo, I will look back at these fonts and try and see which would suit my artist the most. Furthermore, each of these fonts have the authors name written above them in red, so I will know which font to look for if I want to use one of these when I begin to create my own logo.
Instruments Played
In some genres it is often conventional that the artist will play their own instruments - for example, if someone is in a Rock band you would expect them to play guitar, drums or something along those lines - however, if someone was a Pop artist, then you wouldn't expect them to play their own instruments and would usually notice that they have other people who will play the instruments for them. In the Pop Punk genre, it is stereotypically known for artists to play their own instruments, which is why I have decided to make my artist play the guitar themselves. In my music video I have already constructed an idea where my artist will be playing the guitar during the performance scenes and this will reinforce that this is the Pop Punk genre and that my artist can play their own instruments. In addition, I may also have my artist holding a guitar for the digipack and poster as this will present continuity between the products and present that they are meant to be together. The audience will generally see someone in this genre with an electric guitar, but it usually depends on the style of the song and as my chosen song is quite slow, I will have my artist playing an acoustic guitar instead of an electric because this is what is played in the song. The use of these type of instruments will help create an identity for my artist because it highlights that she is a professional, is able to make her music herself and can play all the instruments herself which will make her songs more meaningful and relatable for the audience because they know that it is all originally coming from her.
Extras
Some other ways I have stated that my artists identity could be created include; how they talk to their fans and the media, what their background story is and also who their management team are. When it comes to how the artist talks to the media and their fans, this presents the artists identity because it will demonstrate how the artist will approach other people and how they treat others because if an artist was horrible and mean to people, then the audience wouldn't find that artist appealing and wouldn't want to be a fan of them or listen to their music because of the way they treat other people. However, if the artist was really nice to their fans and the media then more people will like them because they will think of them as a caring person and may look up to them as an idol. Moreover, I cannot really create an identity for my artist in relation to this because they don't genuinely have a fan base yet and are not talking to the media, so this cannot be looked at in more detail - however, I am sure my artist will be caring and considerate to the media and their fans because they have been through a lot themselves which can be witnessed in their lyrics and the artist would want her fans and the media to be happy as well. Following on from that, the artists background could help in presenting their identity because if someone came from quite a poor background then their audience may want to do more to help the artist because they know where they have come from, but also what they are capable of achieving. Again, I cannot really present this in relation to my artist because due to my artist not legitimately being a real person, they do not have a background, so I cannot show what has occurred in their past. When talking about my artist in relation to management, the better the management an artist has, the more likely they are going to be seen by audiences and people will hear about them because they will be spoken about frequently.
Overall, I now know how I would like to style my artist and how they would be perceived by the world, but all I have to decide is what I would like my artist to wear and what I would like them to do in the music video. Once I have created my storyboard and am certain what locations I want to use, I will then think about costumes and makeup and how I want my artist to blend and fit in with the location or whether I would like her to contradict the location and wear clothes that go against the style that people would expect to see in the music video. Either way I am pretty certain on my artists style, but I now just need to consider how she is going to be portrayed in the music video.
Narrative Theory
A narrative is generally described as a story or plot where the story will describe what happens in the text, but the plot will physically show the audience what is happening in the text. A narrative can be broken down into three different sections which can be remembered as 'Inferred Events', 'Explicitly Shown Events' and 'Non-diegetic Material'. Below I have created a diagram to illustrate these different sections, but also to explain what they all mean. Here is my diagram:
In the diagram above you can identify how these three sections have been split up to demonstrate how a narrative in a certain text is presented. The best way to describe this diagram would be through the use of an example, so as an example, I could say that someone in a film could be playing a spy and is pretending to blend in at a school to hide the fact that they are undercover. In relation to the 'Inferred Events' this means that the audience will not see the spy being born or growing up as a child and will instead just infer and know that the spy has done other things in their life other than just being at the point they are now at, hence the name 'Inferred'. 'Explicitly Shown Events' is what the audience will actually see happening - in relation to the spy film I am using as an example, the audience would watch the spy doing his daily tasks or would see him doing his job he has been made to do by being undercover. Lastly, the non-diegetic material in the spy film will just be any music or sound played on top of the video which the spy themselves is unable to hear, but it creates tension and surprise for the audience.
Terms
The words 'Narrative', 'Diegesis' and 'Verisimilitude' are important terms that people do not often know the meaning to. Which is why I am going to explain each of these terms to help you understand what they mean. Firstly, I have already mentioned what a Narrative is - it is a structure of a story which explains what is happening in the story. Diegesis is the fictional space and time implied by the narrative, it is the world in which the story takes place. Finally, Verisimilitude is the quality of something appearing to be real or true - to keep audiences engaged in stories, the story must appear to be real to the audience as they watch it (the diegetic effect), so the story must therefor have verisimilitude which follows the rules of continuity, temporal and spacial coherence (time and space).
To explain 'Diegesis' in more detail I have provided an example to help you in understanding what it really is. In the TV show 'Doctor Who', the main protagonist called 'The Doctor' is able to travel in space and time in the time travelling machine he owns called the 'TARDIS' which presents that this TV show has its own diegesis which allows the audience to believe that The Doctor is actually able to travel to different planets and the TARDIS really is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Following on from that, in a music video you will not need a fictional world for an artist to be playing live because of there being two different diegesis in the music video.
To explain 'Verisimlitude' in more detail, I have again provided another example to help you in understanding this specific term. The example I am using is a film called 'That Thing You Do' which was directed by Tom Hanks in 1998. This film is about a band called 'The Wonders' who are ironically one hit wonders and throughout this film we can see that space of temporal and spacial coherence has been created.
Here is the trailer for 'That Thing You Do' to help you understand a bit more about this film:
Below I have created a short list which presents different features that have occurred in this film to help create a space of temporal and spacial coherence. Here is the list I have generated:
Below, I have created a slideshow to present all the different theorists and their theories in relation to narrative. Here is my slideshow:
Genre Theory
Genre enables people to study texts and audiences responses to texts by dividing them into categories based on common elements. Genre can be described as a style or category of art, music or literature. Each genre will have its own codes and conventions (signs and signifiers) and whenever audiences see these certain codes and conventions they will know that it is in relation to a certain genre. There are an array of different genres that can be mentioned depending on what the type of media is as there are a range of films genres and a range of music genres which all are different from each other. Some genres include;
In 2001, Daniel Chandler argued that the word 'genre' comes from the French (and originally Latin) word for 'kind' or 'class' and the specific word 'genre' is often used in rhetoric, literary theory and media theory to refer to a distinctive type of text. However, all genres will have sub genres which is essentially just a genre within another genre. For example, a sub genre of Rock music could be Pop Rock. The concept of sub genres means that they are divided up into more specific categories that allow audiences to identify them specifically by their familiar, and what will become recognizable characteristics (Barry Keith Grant, 1995). In 1995, Steve Neale stressed that 'genres are not 'systems' they are processes of systematization'. For example, they are dynamic and evolve over time. On a side note, it is important to know that comedy and animation are not genres and are styles or treatments that are used to engage and entertain the audience.
Paradigm
A paradigm is a structure/model which contains certain conventions of a specific genre. Underneath I have created a quick presentation to present what a paradigm is, but I have also provided some examples to help you in understanding this term in more detail. Here is the presentation I have created:
Generic Characteristics
There are generic characteristics that will frequently be seen across all texts which will all share similar elements depending on what the medium is. Below I have created a list to present what these elements that are occasionally shared are:
Typical mise-en-scene / visual style (iconography, props, set design, lighting, temporal and geographic location, costume, shot types, camera angles, special effects)
Typical Types of narrative (plots, historical setting, set pieces)
Generic Types. For example typical characters (do typical male/female roles exist?)
Theorists
Below I have created a presentation which will allow you to see all the different theorists that have argued something in relation to genre. I have included some images and videos to help you in understanding these different theories that have been constructed. One of the features I have not mentioned in this presentation is that music videos are generally intended to appeal directly toward the younger generation and they are able to do this by reinforcing generic elements of musical genres. In 1975, Dyer stated that music videos are postmodern texts whose main purpose is to promote a star persona. Here is the presentation I have created:
