Over the summer holiday, I began to look at songs that I could possibly use for a music video and by the time I got back to college, I knew what genre of music I was going to do, but I was unsure on which artist or song I was going to use. After some careful research into this genre and the analysing of songs to figure out if any ideas I had created would go with the song I was listening to, I have finally chosen the song I would like to do for my music video. The song I have chosen for my music video is 'Not Enough' by the Pop Punk singer 'Avril Lavigne'. Underneath I have added an audio video from YouTube to allow you to know what the song sounds like.
Here is the audio video for 'Not Enough' by 'Avril Lavigne':
I have chosen this song because it stands out more to me than the other songs I had chosen which could possibly be used. As soon as I heard this song I understood what the lyrics where signifying and I was able to think of ideas straight away. Whenever I listen to this song I feel a great deal of emotion and sadness and I would like the feelings I have to be expressed in a music video to make people love this sort of music the way I do because it can make people feel in a way that they thought they woud never feel. Once I had narrowed down all of my song choices, I was left with 'The Only Exception' by 'Paramore', 'Guts' by 'All Time Low' and this song. I did not choose 'The Only Exception' by 'Paramore' because I knew that this song already had an existing music video and I want to make a video where people would watch it from scratch and would have no idea as to what could happen in the video, so the audience would watch my video and think that the concepts that have been used are great and go well with the song because they have never seen anything like it before. On top of that, I did not choose 'Guts' by 'All Time Low' because I decided that I wanted to do a song where there is a female singing because as I am a femalen myself, I will be able to put my own feelings and experiences into the music video as the song is from a females perspective and I think this will work better than me trying to work from a males perspective.
I personally like this song because it is emotion and has a lot of meaning behind it. A lot of the time I like to understand the meaning behind lyrics because I love the idea of people being able to relate to lyrics from songs they have heard. Also, I thought that this was quite a passionate song which will be beneficial for reeling in an audience because they will hopefully feel the affection in the song and will want to know more about it. Although I am into faster and more hardcore songs than this, I quite like the soft melody that has been used as it is more powerful for the audience as it slowly leads up to the main meaning of the song which is also when the beat of the song kicks in - this will make the song more intriguing and the audience are able to get a better understanding of the song. By knowing the meaning behind the lyrics of the song, I will be able to get a better understanding about what to do in my music video. After doing some research on this song I found out what it is really about and I knew who the singers partner was as they were quite a popular and well known couple for fans of this genre, so this makes the song more emotional for me as this is one of the artists I enjoy listening to and knowing about, so I understand the song more and feel more emotion which I can input into the process of this music video.
Background On 'Not Enough'
This song has been taken from Avril Lavigne's fourth studio album 'Goodbye Lullaby' and was written by both Avril Lavigne and Evan Taubenfeld. The song was also produced by Avril's ex husband Deryck Whibley who can be known from the band 'Sum 41'. This song can be interpreted in a range of different ways, but most people interpret it in one way - this is that the lyrics state that the singer (Avril) is in a failed relationship and nothing they do pleases one another anymore and Avril thinks that it would be best to just end what they have together and 'give up' what they have because he isn't enough for her like it used to be.
It is rumoured that the song is about Avril's ex husband Deryck Whibley, who was also the producer of this song. Many people have speculated that this song is about Deryck because he apparently didn't give Avril everything that she needed - however, Avril has neither confirmed or denied this. As I enjoy looking deeper into songs and their meanings, I decided to look more into this and I found out that the song 'Not Enough' has the same chord progression and a similar melody to Sum 41's song called 'With Me' which is the band Deryck Whibley is in - this is also one of the songs that I considered using for my music video, which higlights some simialrities because they are in the same genre. Nonetheless, the lyrics in the songs are completely opposite and this may demonstrate that Avril and Deryck may have been trying to communicate through the use of music to solve their problems, but it did not work out. In spite of that, both Avril and Deryck are now still friends and are often working on musical projects together. Underneath I have created a quick video which will allow you to see the similarities between the two songs that I have mentioned - I also decided to add an effect to the songs to make it easier to hear the similarities. By listening to this video you are able to see that they are similar in some ways and 'With Me' sounds like a slower tempoed version of 'Not Enough'. When editing this video I left a gap between the two songs to allow a break, so there is a small lag between the two songs that will play which may make a slight repetetive jumping sound.
Here is the video I created to help you see the similarities between these two song:
Although these songs were released quite a few years apart as 'With Me' by Sum 41 was released in 2007 and 'Not Enough' by Avril Lavigne was released in 2011. However, both may still relate in a way as Avril may have been too much into the heartbreak after their split in 2009 that she decided to make a song similar to one of Deryck's songs to hint in a way that the song is written about him. The lyrics in the 'With Me' song imply that nothing is right when Deryck isn't with the person he loves because everything that he does isn't the same and he can't do it withouth them - he also states that he wants it to last forever and if anything ever did come between them, then he keep trying because he doesn't want to let go of what they have. However, in the lyrics for 'Not Enough' we can see that everything Avril was getting from her lover wasn't enough and she needed more like she used to have - she may regret the love she is losing, but it is the best thing for her to do is give it all up as it wasn't enough for her. These may link in a way because it may highlight that Deryck used to love Avril and showed her everything, but now he is no longer showing this love like he used to and doesn't love her in the way that he said he always would. Nonetheless, it was said that the couple split up because they believe that they married too young and thought they would not be able to live their lives entirely because they need to explore things on their own and without onw another.
Here are the lyrics for both songs and hopefully you will be able to see how the lyrics contrast, but still relate in a meanigful way:
Here is a mood board I have created which I think represents this song and also presents how the music video can be shown and produced. These are some of the things I envisioned when I thought about creating a music video for this song:
Avril Lavigne
Avril Ramona Lavigne is a 31 year old singer and songwriter who was born on 27th September 1984 in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. She began her singing career at the age of 15, at this age she appeared on stage with Shania Twain (who is also a Canadian singer and songerwriter) after winning an event. By the age of 16, she had signed a two album recording contract with Arista Records which was worth $2 Million. By 2002, Avril had released her debut album called 'Let Go' which featured themes of 'Skater Punk' and 'Pop Punk Princess'. This album made Avril the youngest female soloist to reach number 1 in the UK. As of 2013, this album has sold nearly over 7 million copies in the US and over 20 million copies worldwide. Since 2013, Avril has sold 40 milliom albums worldwide and 50 million singles worldwide. Overall, Avril has released 5 studio albums which include 'Let Go', released in 2002 which has had 16,000,000 sales worldwide, 'Under My Skin', released in 2004 which has had 10,000,000 sales worldwide, 'The Best Damn Thing', released in 2007 which has had 6,000,000 sales worldwide, 'Goodbye Lullaby', released in 2011 which has had 1,3000,000 sales worldwide and her last album which is self titled 'Avril Lavigne' was released in 2013 which has had 650,000 sales worldwide. Avril also released a live album called 'My World' in 2003.
Avril took a break from recording music in the mid 2000's and decided to pursue careers in such things as feature film acting and desiging clothes and perfumes. In the 2006 film 'Over The Hedge', Avril voiced an Virginia Opossum called Heather. In 2008, Avril introduced her clothing line known as 'Abbey Dawn'. In 2009, she released her first perfume which was called 'Black Star', by 2010, she had later released her second perfume called 'Forbidden Rose' and then by 2011, she had released her third perfume which was called 'Wild Rose'. In July 2006, Avril married her boyfriend of two years. Deryck Whibley, who (as I have previously said) is the lead singer and guitarist for the band 'Sum 41'. This marriage only lasted four years - however, the two are still great friends and work well together to create music. In 2013, Avril then married Chad Kroeger from the band 'Nickelback', but they later seperated in 2015.
