When determining what song I was going to use for my music video, I knew that I had a huge range of songs that I would be able to choose from. The first thing I had to do was figure out what genre I wanted to do and I decided to choose Pop Punk as my genre - this is because I personally enjoy listening to this music and this comes as an advantage because I know the background stories for a lot of these artists, so I understand the real meaning behind their lyrics, but I am also able to interpret the lyrics in my own way - meaning, when I will be generating ideas for my music video, I will have a wide range of ideas I will be able to choose from.
After concluding I was going to use this genre for my music video, I then had to choose some songs that I could possibly use for my music video and I thought this was quite an easy task because when listening to music I regularly imagine a story in my head that could go with the lyrics, which is why I was looking forward to creating a music video because I knew I already had some great ideas. I decided to create a quick mind map of any song ideas I could possibly use for a music video which would help me in finally choosing a song I would like to do for my video.
Here is the 'possible song choice' mind map that I generated:
By looking at this mind map you are able to see that the majority of the songs I have chosen are quite slow - I have decided to chose a song with a slower melody because I think these type of songs have more emotion and will be able to appeal and keep the concern of the audience more because they will be able to feel and understand the affection from the video and will want to watch it to the very end. On top of that, a large mass of the songs I have chosen include a female singer - I have personally done this for two reasons, the first reason is that I generally listen to Pop Punk bands that usually have male singers in, so I decided that maybe I should change things up a bit and see what ideas I could come up with if I had a female as the main singer. The second reason is that I assume I will be able to generate better ideas when it is from a women's point of view because I am a female myself, so I may be able to understand the meaning of the songs more than I would with a male song - however, this isn't always the case as a wide range of these songs are relatable and understandable for both males and females.
3 Chosen Song Choices
Paramore - The Only Exception
I have chosen this song as one of my choices because I liked the idea that it is a slow song that has a lot of meaning behind it which I think I would be able to express in the music video if I decided to use this song. This song can be interpreted in a range of different ways but I understand this song to be about the singers parents going through a rough time when she was younger and they may have possibly gone through a divorce. As this has happened in her childhood, it may have led to her no longer believing in love because of this. However, she has now found someone who she thinks will help her to believe in love again because all the things she has been through with her parents makes her think that love won't last, but she has found someone in her life that is making her believe that love will be able to last.
Out of all three of the songs I have chosen which I could possibly use for my music video, this is the only one that already has an existing music video. Here is the music video for this song:
Avril Lavigne - Not Enough
This is another one of the songs I could possibly use for my music video - again, this is a slow song which will usually have more meaning and emotion in the lyrics, so the song will be able to appeal and express emotion more to the audience. This song could be interpreted in a range of different ways - however, I believe that this song is about a failed relationship where the singer is no longer getting the love that she used get from her partner and she thinks that it would be best to end the relationship because what she is getting from him it not enough anymore. This is one of my interpretations, but there are many others that can be interpreted from the lyrics of this song.
All Time Low - Guts
This song is more upbeat and positive than the others I have chosen and is sung by a male rather than a female. Even though this is more of a lively song, the lyrics sang are still meaningful and a good narrative can easily be created from the lyrics of the song. Again, this song can be interpreted in many different ways, but I believe that this song is about how someone has been hiding what they think and feel their whole life and have been wanting to express their feelings their whole life. However, the singer has now declared their feelings and now they know how it feels to express how they are feeling and are free to do whatever they want without them caring what other people think.
